Daimler AG, parent of German luxury car brand Mercedes-Benz, will improve its production capacity at its Beijing joint venture due to growing local demand for the new Mercedes-Benz E-Class sedan, Bloomberg reported Monday.</p]
According to the report, Mercedes-Benz is trying to surpass BMW in China's luxury-car market. The capacity of Beijing Benz-Daimler Chrysler Automotive (BBDC), which is a joint venture between Beijing Automotive Industry Holding, Daimler Ag and Daimler North East Asia, would be increased three-fold to 300,000 units per year.</p]
Last month, Mercedes'China sales surged 224 percent to 8,700 units from a year earlier. Sales in the first 11 months grew 68 percent and it is very likely that total sales in 2009 will be over 65,000 units. China's demand for luxury cars helped Daimler achieve a new sales record in the fastest-growing auto market for every month of this year.</p]
Daimler's Mercedes-Benz brand sales are expected to grow over 60 percent compared with the same period last year as the appetite for the E-class and S-Class luxury cars expected to be a key drivers of sales next year.</p]
Mercedes will surpass BMW in China soon, said Daimler CEO Dieter Zetsche last month. BMW is the second-biggest luxury-car automaker in China, while Volkswagen's Audi is No. 1.</p]
Beijing Auto has also agreed to take over a 40 percent stake of Fujian Motor in Fujian Daimler, which is a southeast China-based commercial vehicle venture with Daimler AG.</p]
